Fewer Divorces, Fewer Marriages

This report is from Dayton, OH (the Dayton Daily News), but I know of no reason why we wouldn’t see it replicated across the U.S. and perhaps around the world. The good news is that the number of divorces is down. The bad news is the most likely reason, that young people are decreasingly likely to bother with marriage.

The people marrying tend to be older – 27.4 for men and 25.8 for women. We already know that couples who marry young are more likely to divorce, so it stands to reason that if fewer couples marry young, fewer will divorce.

The rate of marriage has dropped far more in the last 10 years than the rate of divorce, in some states by as much as 40%. More than one-third of all children born in the U.S. are now born to unmarried parents.
