If you make less that $56,000 a year, you can prepare and submit your taxes for free on line.

Use this link:
http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html (available mid January)

(to get free prep- you need to use the link on the irs website- if you go directly to the tax prep company site, you will have to pay)

Yes - I removed some posts. Not because they were out of line, but the thread had moved to the second page and this is important info for people to have - how to file their taxes for free if they're eligible. So - my apologies to those whose posts I removed.

so does the irs method have the same turn around time of your return as the other companies?  10-14 days, does anyone know?

Since you file through the IRS regardless of which method/company you use, the turn-around should be the same.

Yep- Turn around is the same. (the program is identical to the one used by paying customers)

Another thing to mention is that you don't have to do it all in one sitting- you set up a user name and password so you can start and complete when you can. Once completed- you can submit it immediately or wait.

The program walks you through the steps, asking questions, gathering info and filling in the blanks.

Try it- You'll like it!!! LOL

AIM - do you know if you can import info from TurboTax (say) or do you have to reenter everything?

I don't know- It seems I *always* end up using a different company each year (in my attempts to find those that will do my state taxes for free as well - or in needing a special form completed)

Just make sure any opportunity to import doesn't take you away from the free version Roll Eyes

And here's a link to a post over at Money regarding filing status that may be useful.

My taxes are done! I had been busy helping clients and friends so mine are last!

(banking on line was quite helpful- I had easy access to all my statements for info needed on donations and work expenses)

Now I get to correct my son's returns as he received *TWO* more W-2 statements. (He has a total of 4 Shocked)

This weekend is FAFSA time (my son's and a friend's son) The fun don't stop!!! Grin
