New York Divorce

These are the best resources I’ve found so far for dealing with divorce in New York, including child support, property division, and the other legal issues you face when you’re going through divorce in New York.

The DivorceInfo Network Lawyer for New York is Steve Abel. Here are his FAQ’s on divorce in New York.

The Unified Court System has made available the Uniform Uncontested Divorce Packet online. What a terrific service! I wish more states’ courts systems did this.

If you don’t need a lawyer and just want to file a simple divorce, you can order the forms and do it yourself, or you can get DocuPro to do it for you.

You can also use New York Divorce Online, which offers the following advantages: (1) You prepare the papers online without paying any money; (2) You decide only after the papers are prepared whether you want to pay for them; and (3) The charge is only $49.00 for all the required documents, including the marital settlement agreement. Looks like a pretty good deal to me.

BlumbergExcelsior has a professionally produced program to guide you through the process of an uncontested divorce without using a lawyer. They charge $39.95. You download the program and try it, and you pay only if you decide to print the documents. I downloaded and ran it through some of its paces, and it seems to work smoothly.

Douglas Barics has a good set of FAQ’s about divorce in New York. Ditto Joel R. Brandes.

Here’s the link to New York’s office for child support enforcement. I love their Interactive Tour of Child Support, which is more like an online course. Very thorough. DivorceNet has provided a worksheet for figuring child support.
