Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church

This is by no means the official web site of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. The church has its own official web site. This is simply one church member's description of a wonderful piece of the Body of Christ. I love it warts and all, as you'll see below. What you see here doesn't represent anyone's opinion but mine.

Our Mission

Our mission is to share Christ:

By learning the story,

telling the story,

and living the story.

A Little about VHUMC

We are about 5,400 members. We have a commitment to outreach and helping the community that keeps us in the forefront of indigent shelters, AIDS care teams, international work trips, and community service. The congregation also has an unusual commitment to ongoing Bible study. Several hundred of us have completed one or more sessions of Disciple Bible Study, a 34-week intensive journey through the scriptures. Recently, we've also begun offering "Christian Believer," a wonderful introduction to Christian doctrine, as well as a gratifying array of other intensive Bible studies.

Vestavia Hills is a predominantly white, predominantly republican, predominantly upper middle class bedroom community south of Birmingham. Whether we like it or not (and some of us do not), VHUMC looks a lot like its community.

Neat Stuff about VHUMC

bulletOur singles ministry is a haven of caring and support. There's a nice mix of never-married and single-again, although the numbers of single-again (read that divorced) are greater. We are a splendid way-station for the recently divorced. People come and spend a few months with us, lick their wounds, and move on. We are proud to play that healing role.
bulletAdult Sunday School in general is a juggernaut at VHUMC. We have about 30 different classes appealing to different age groups, faith traditions, and teaching styles, some meeting at 8:30 and most meeting at 9:45 on Sunday mornings. Our average Sunday School attendance is more than 900.
bulletWe have some of the finest preaching of any church in the world. Every one of our conference appointed ministers (Dalton Styes, Bill Bostick, John Mullaney, and Sherry Harris) is a fantastic preacher, and Joe Elmore, a retired minister on our staff, was the first minister who got me started taking notes. There is literally no worship service offered at any time when you can't enter knowing you will hear an excellent sermon, thoughtfully prepared, engagingly delivered, that challenges you to grow in your faith. This certainly hasn't always been the case, but it is now, and it helps bring worship alive. As a church member, I have to pinch myself periodically to remind me that this is really happening at MY CHURCH!
bulletWe have a wonderful church library. I don't know how many volumes, but it's well-stocked and lovingly maintained.
bulletThere's always something happening at VHUMC. The place is just never quiet. That's good.
bulletWe have extraordinary gifts and talents among our members. We are teachers, writers, actors, poets, singers, dancers, linguists, healers, scholars, proclaimers, and prophets. No matter the need, there's a rich pool of resources from which to draw. Exciting.
bulletOur sanctuary choir is superb. Mark Ridings, the director of the Alabama Symphony chorus, is our Minister of Music.
bulletOur gardening ministry keeps the grounds around the church interesting. And I do mean interesting. This is not your mother's garden club.
bulletSomebody's always helping somebody.
bulletSome of the neatest stuff about VHUMC happens far away from the church buildings, wherever we go to help people.
bulletWe're not ashamed to talk about Jesus Christ, about the Holy Spirit, or about the power of prayer. It's a fun place to be.

Our Worship Services

We have six worship services each Sunday.

8:10 a.m.: Communion service in the Chapel. This is a short service of Word and Table designed to finish in time for 8:30 worship in the sanctuary. There is no sermon.

8:30 a.m.: Early worship. This is a traditional United Methodist service in the sanctuary. It lasts about an hour. Service music is from either the Men's Chorus (on the first Sunday of each month), the New Life Singers (our youth choir), the Women's Chorus, or the Sanctuary Choir. The most frequent preacher is Dalton Styes, our Senior Pastor, although Dalton (also called Butch) shares the pulpit often with other pastors on the staff.

9:45 a.m.: This is a casual, informal service in the sanctuary. It lasts about 45 minutes. Service music is from one or two individuals using a combination of piano and guitar. This is a less rowdy, more introspective take on contemporary worship. The most frequent preacher is Dalton Styes.

11:00 a.m.: Late worship. This is also a traditional United Methodist worship service in the sanctuary. It lasts about an hour. Service music is typically from the Sanctuary Choir. The most frequent preacher is Dalton Styes.

11:00 a.m.: SonShine Celebration (also called "Rock & Roll Church"), an informal, contemporary service with lots of singing and a casual style, in Tyson Hall, our main fellowship hall. SonShine Celebration has a come-and-go atmosphere, so it's a great place to bring small children. It lasts about 50 minutes. Service music is from a praise team using piano, amplified guitar, and percussion. The most frequent preacher is Sherry Harris.

5:00 p.m.: Vespers. This is an informal evening worship service in the Chapel. Service music is from a piano player, and the congregational singing is from the Cokesbury Hymnal. The service lasts about 50 minutes. The most frequent preacher is Bill Bostick.

Accessibility

Our record here is spotty at best. Our physical plant is all too typical for churches. We've added to our buildings at least six times, each time thinking this addition surely would be the last. One of the many unfortunate consequences of this disconnected expansion: someone has calculated that we are physically on an astounding nine different levels.

To our credit, we have recently made a concerted effort to counteract our poor planning with a system of ramps, elevators, and walkways that makes almost all our facilities accessible, although our lowest level must be accessed from outdoors.

On other fronts, we've been less attentive:
bulletWe offer no sign language interpretation for the hearing impaired.
bulletOur elevator is neither braille nor sound equipped.
bulletWe offer no large print hymnals or bulletins.
bulletWe have a sound amplification system to help the hearing impaired, but I understand it doesn't work very well.

Directions to the Church

VHUMC is about two blocks east of Highway 31 in the heart of Vestavia. If you're approaching from the north, pass Vestavia Temple (white circular monument at the top of the hill) on your right, then look for a Rite-Aid drug store on your right. At that intersection, turn left on Kentucky Avenue, passing SouthTrust Bank on your left, and the church will be about two blocks ahead on your right.

If you're approaching from the south, look for Red Lobster on your left and then McDonalds on your right. Take your next right on Kentucky Avenue, passing SouthTrust Bank on your left, and the church will be about two blocks ahead on your right.
